C11 In Church

Священник местной церкви согласился на интервью после мессы. Бен приходит в церковь. Интерьер исторической церкви светлый, но также немного старый и пыльный. Атмосфера безмятежная.

The priest from the local church has agreed to an interview after mass. Ben arrives at the church. The interior of the historic church is light but also a bit old and dusty. The atmosphere is peaceful.

Бен сидит на скамье и слушает молитвы. Он опускает голову и вдруг начинает плакать. Он вспоминает своё последнее посещение церкви и то, как он был опустошён смертью деда. Когда ему приходится чихнуть, пожилая дама рядом с ним качает головой и что-то тихо бормочет.

Ben sits in a pew and listens to the prayers. He lowers his head and suddenly he starts to shed some tears. He remembers his last visit to the church and how devastated he was about the death of his grandfather. When he has to sneeze, an old lady next to him shakes her head and mumbles something silently to herself.

Он смотрит вокруг и восхищается цветными скульптурами и каменными статуями, которые его окружают. Он особенно интересуется скульптурами. Странно видеть в церкви такие творческие объекты.

He looks around and admires the colourful sculptures and stone statues that surround him. He is particularly interested in the sculptures. It is confusing to see such imaginative objects in church.

Играет трубный оркестр, и он насвистывает мелодию. Пожилая дама это тоже не одобряет.

A trumpet orchestra is performing and he whistles the tune. The old lady disapproves of that too.

Вскоре после этого служба заканчивается, и к нему подходит священник.

Shortly afterwards, the service finishes and the priest comes over to him.

“ Hello! Many thanks for granting me this interview regarding the ‘Pure and Helpful’ charity you're running.”

“Thank you, Mister Dast, for finding time for me on such short notice.

Typically, I would notify you earlier of such aid appeals, but I had to rush because I wanted to put out a clear signal now. The victims of the earthquake have suffered greatly and we need to support them now rather than later.

I've been there and I could not believe my eyes. Entire quarters of the city have just disappeared. I was not prepared for such an experience.”

“I read that the warning couldn't be heard because there was a problem with the microphones or with the volume of the warning?”

«Оборудование было в порядке, но в прошлом было так много ложных тревог, что в последнее время население просто игнорировало их. Многие пешеходы просто отказались следовать данным им указаниям и остались на тротуаре. Они были убиты, когда дома, которые не были построены безопасно, просто рухнули. "The equipment was fine, but in the past there have been so many false alarms that lately the population was simply ignoring them. Many pedestrians just refused to follow the directions given to them and stayed on the pavement. They were killed when houses which weren't constructed safely just crumbled down. It's very chaotic there, the death toll is still increasing.

Bodies are being extracted from the debris and survivors are dealing with grief and the guilt of ignoring the alerts. The inquest into the damage is still ongoing and the completion of the assessment isn't expected before the end of the year. Some damage is invisible and requires a comprehensive analysis. The rescue is continuing. Teams which specialise in this are bringing in their tools and endeavouring to help the victims in their disastrous situation. There's still no running water and the scale of the reconstruction is unquestionably enormous.”

“They are involved in the search and rescue work and they're also trying to fix the public transport problems.”

“How can this be prevented in the future?”

«Другие регионы лучше справляются с риском. Не соблюдались элементарные правила безопасности, о них следовало знать лучше. Более прочные материалы давно разработали, если бы только их использовали, чтобы строить дома. Это также была вина профсоюзов и правительственных организаций.

“Other regions are managing the risk better. Elementary safety rules were not followed and they should have known better. Stronger materials were developed long ago; if only they had been used to build the houses. It was also the fault of the unions and the government organisations.

 They neglected the quality of materials and the maximum height of the buildings. There will be more research on the products found in the ruins. We expect an intermediary report soon. People have started to tidy up and reconstruct their houses, but they're dependent upon the international institutions which cover the expenses.”
