C11 In Church

Il prete della chiesa locale ha accettato di essere intervistato dopo la messa. Ben entra in chiesa. L'interno della chiesa storica è luminoso ma anche un po' vecchio e polveroso. L'atmosfera è tranquilla.

The priest from the local church has agreed to an interview after mass. Ben arrives at the church. The interior of the historic church is light but also a bit old and dusty. The atmosphere is peaceful.

Ben si siede su una panca e ascolta le preghiere. Abbassa la testa e improvvisamente inizia a versare qualche lacrima. Ricorda la sua ultima visita in chiesa e quanto era devastato dalla morte di suo nonno. Quando deve starnutire, una vecchia signora accanto a lui scuote la testa e mormora qualcosa tra sé e sé silenziosamente.

Ben sits in a pew and listens to the prayers. He lowers his head and suddenly he starts to shed some tears. He remembers his last visit to the church and how devastated he was about the death of his grandfather. When he has to sneeze, an old lady next to him shakes her head and mumbles something silently to herself.

He looks around and admires the colourful sculptures and stone statues that surround him. He is particularly interested in the sculptures. It is confusing to see such imaginative objects in church.

A trumpet orchestra is performing and he whistles the tune. The old lady disapproves of that too.

Shortly afterwards, the service finishes and the priest comes over to him.

“Thank you, Mister Dast, for finding time for me on such short notice.

In genere, la avviserei prima di tali richieste di donazioni, ma ho dovuto sbrigarmi perché volevo inviare subito un segnale forte. Le vittime del terremoto hanno sofferto enormemente e dobbiamo supportarle adesso piuttosto che dopo.

Typically, I would notify you earlier of such aid appeals, but I had to rush because I wanted to put out a clear signal now. The victims of the earthquake have suffered greatly and we need to support them now rather than later.

“I read that the warning couldn't be heard because there was a problem with the microphones or with the volume of the warning?”

“L'attrezzatura era in buone condizioni, ma in passato ci sono stati così tanti falsi allarmi che ultimamente la popolazione li ha semplicemente ignorati. Molti pedoni si sono rifiutati di seguire le istruzioni impartite e sono rimasti sul marciapiede. Sono stati uccisi quando le case, che non erano state costruite in modo sicuro, sono crollate. "The equipment was fine, but in the past there have been so many false alarms that lately the population was simply ignoring them. Many pedestrians just refused to follow the directions given to them and stayed on the pavement. They were killed when houses which weren't constructed safely just crumbled down. It's very chaotic there, the death toll is still increasing.

Bodies are being extracted from the debris and survivors are dealing with grief and the guilt of ignoring the alerts. The inquest into the damage is still ongoing and the completion of the assessment isn't expected before the end of the year. Some damage is invisible and requires a comprehensive analysis. The rescue is continuing. Teams which specialise in this are bringing in their tools and endeavouring to help the victims in their disastrous situation. There's still no running water and the scale of the reconstruction is unquestionably enormous.”

“Is the government willing to do something?”

Sono coinvolti nei lavori di ricerca e salvataggio e stanno anche cercando di riprarare i trasporti pubblici.

“They are involved in the search and rescue work and they're also trying to fix the public transport problems.”

Come possiamo prevenire tutto questo in futuro?

“How can this be prevented in the future?”

“Altre regioni stanno gestendo meglio il rischio. Le regole di sicurezza di base non sono state seguite e avrebbero dovuto conoscerle meglio. Materiali più forti sono stati sviluppati molto tempo fa, se solo fossero stati usati per costruire case. E' stata colpa anche dei sindacati e delle organizzazioni governative.

“Other regions are managing the risk better. Elementary safety rules were not followed and they should have known better. Stronger materials were developed long ago; if only they had been used to build the houses. It was also the fault of the unions and the government organisations.

Quelli hanno trascurato la qualità dei materiali e l'altezza massima degli edifici. Ci saranno ulteriori ricerche sui prodotti trovati nelle rovine. Attendiamo presto una relazione intermedia. Le persone hanno iniziato a riordinare e ricostruire le loro case, ma sono dipendenti dalle istituzioini internazionali che stanno coprendo le spese.

 They neglected the quality of materials and the maximum height of the buildings. There will be more research on the products found in the ruins. We expect an intermediary report soon. People have started to tidy up and reconstruct their houses, but they're dependent upon the international institutions which cover the expenses.”
