C12 The Fire

Laura está fazendo uma reportagem sobre um incêndio na escola primária para a próxima edição do jornal da cidade. É a maior sensação da cidade desde o suicídio de um trabalhador no cais que foi descoberto por um voluntário no ano passado.

Laura is reporting on a fire in a primary school for the next issue of the town journal. It is the biggest sensation in town since the suicide of a dock worker whose body was discovered by a volunteer last year.

Houve um incêndio no centro de esportes da escola durante a noite. Agora, há danos graves na frente e na extensão do edifício.

There was a fire in the sports centre of the school overnight. Now, there is severe damage to the front and to the extension of the building.

Bombeiros exaustos estão no local quando Laura chega. Eles parecem soldados em uma zona de guerra. Ela fala com o líder da equipe que está colocando uma escada de volta na van.

Exhausted firefighters are on site when Laura arrives. They look like soldiers in a war zone. She speaks to the team leader who is just putting a ladder back into the van.

“A causa do incêndio ainda é desconhecida? Eu ouvi algumas especulações. 

“Is the cause of the fire still unknown? I've heard some speculation.”

Sabemos que tudo começou no departamento de atletismo. Ontem à noite, houve uma luta de boxe que o campeão juvenil local venceu. Seus apoiadores organizaram uma festa no salão vizinho após sua vitória. Nossa hipótese é que o incêndio começou depois que todos foram embora. ”

"We know that it started in the athletics department. There was a boxing match last night which the local youth champion won. His supporters organised a party in the hall next door after his victory. Our assumption is that the fire started after everybody left.”

“Eles poderiam ter causado as chamas com um isqueiro por acidente?

“Could they have caused the flames with a lighter by accident?”

“Nada indica isso. A investigação ainda está em andamento. A brigada de incêndio deve avaliar totalmente os danos. Também acho que provavelmente era um fumante. ”

“Nothing indicates that. The inquiry is still taking place. The fire brigade has to fully assess the damage. But I think that it probably was a smoker.”

O treinador esportivo se aproxima e diz: “Recentemente, atualizamos nosso suprimento de energia. Removemos cabos antigos e instalamos novas tomadas. Também atualizamos os encanamentos de água. É estranho que o incêndio tenha ocorrido logo após a reforma.”

The sports coach comes over and says: “We recently got our energy supply updated. We removed old cables and installed new power plugs. We also updated the water pipes. It's strange that the fire occurred just after the renovation.”

“Talvez os trabalhadores tenham sido pouco profissionais ou descuidados? Eles pareciam confiáveis? "

“Maybe the workers have been unprofessional or careless? Did they seem trustworthy?”

“Sim, eles pareciam competentes. Vamos descobrir quem é o responsável por isso e eles serão punidos. O pensamento de que o trabalho não foi feito corretamente é assustador. Queríamos o máximo de segurança para nossos alunos e funcionários. Os construtores deveriam ter feito isso em conformidade com os mais altos padrões de segurança. ”

“Yes, they seemed competent. We will find out who is responsible for this and they will be punished. The thought that the work hasn't been done properly is scary. We wanted maximum security for our students and employees. The builders were supposed to do this according to the highest safety standards.”

“Pode haver outra explicação?”

“Could there be another explanation?”

“Curiosamente, alguém que levava seu cachorro para passear aqui na noite passada ouviu gritos. Isso nos surpreendeu. Pode ter relevância porque contradiz com as declarações dos outros participantes, que afirmam que o edifício estava vazio depois da festa. Mas, mais uma vez, estamos todos apenas especulando aqui. Temos que esperar pelo relatório. ”

“Interestingly, someone who walked their dog here last night heard screams. That surprised us. It might be of relevance because it contradicts the declarations of the other participants who say the building was empty after the party. But, once again, we're all only speculating here. We have to wait for the report.”

“Você está certo! Perdoe-me por ser tão impaciente. ”

“You're right! Forgive me for being so impatient.”

Laura pisa em alguma coisa. Ela se abaixa e pega o item. Primeiro ela pensa que é lixo, mas parece estranho. Tem apenas alguns milímetros de comprimento e parece borracha, mas tem uma superfície brilhante. Ela acha que pode ser uma evidência relevante para a investigação. Ela prontamente a entrega a um oficial.

Laura steps on something. She bends down and picks up the item. At first, she thinks it is litter, but it looks weird. It is only some millimetres long and feels like rubber but has a shiny surface. She thinks that it might be relevant evidence for the investigation. She promptly hands it over to an officer.

“Somos gratos por todas as possíveis pistas. Mesmo algo que parece insignificante pode nos ajudar a resolver esse quebra-cabeça. Os pais se sentem compreensivelmente inseguros no momento. O bem-estar de seus filhos é sagrado para nós. É nosso dever encontrar uma resposta rápida. Vamos resolver isso rapidamente. Seria preferível que tivéssemos conhecimentos sobre as investigações dos outros, mas eles parecem preferir trabalhar separadamente.

“We're grateful for every potential clue. Even something that seems insignificant could help us solve this puzzle. The parents feel understandably insecure at the moment. The well-being of their children is sacred for all of us. It is our duty to find a prompt answer. We'll resolve this in no time. It would be preferable if we had insights into the investigations of the others but they seem to prefer to work separately.

Alocamos mais recursos para isso no decorrer de uma semana e podemos prolongar a investigação, se necessário. Já encontramos alguns vestígios e nossos analistas estão conduzindo testes no momento. Um obstáculo na investigação é o monóxido de carbono, que ainda estava elevado quando o medimos nesta manhã. ”

"We have allocated more resources to this for the duration of the week and can lengthen the investigation if necessary. We have found already some traces and our analysts are conducting tests at the moment. One obstacle in the investigation is the level of carbon monoxide, which was still elevated when we measured it this morning.”
