C5 At Home

Anna trascorre il fine settimana acasa dei suoi genitori. Ha trascorso praticamente tutta la sua infanzia lì. I suoi genitori hanno appena preso un gattino che ora sta gelosamente guardando questo sconosciuto visitatore. Quando Anna gli accarezza il pelo, il gattino fa le fusa ad un ritmo costante.

Anna is spending the weekend at her parents’ house. She spent practically her whole childhood there. Her parents just got a little kitten who is now jealously looking at this unfamiliar visitor. When Anna strokes its fur, the kitten starts purring in a steady rhythm.  

Anna è seduta davanti al camino con sua madre dopo una passeggiata nell'aria gelida. Sono andate alla fontana nel centro del paese.

Anna sits at the fireplace with her mum after a walk in the freezing air outside. They went to the fountain in the village centre.

Accenderò il termosifone nella tua vecchia stanza. Il riscaldamento centralizzato non sarà sufficiente in queste condizioni estremamente fredde.

“I’ll switch on the heater in your old bedroom. The central heating won't be enough in these extremely cold conditions.”

Sì, fa sorprendentemente freddo considerando il sole fuori. Vorrei prendere lo snowboard domani e andare in montagna, ma soffro ancora di mal di gola.

“Yes, it's really surprisingly cold given the sunshine outside. I wish that I could take my snowboard tomorrow and drive into the mountains, but I'm still suffering from a sore throat.”

Pensavo che ti saresti rinchiusa nella tua stanza per studiare lì? Sembra che tu non sia molto preoccupata per l'esame. "

“I thought you'd lock yourself in your room and study? It sounds like you're not very worried about the exam.”

L'insegnamento all'università è molto buono e dopo il corso rivedo sempre subito con Sophia. Quindi posso prendermi una pausa qui.

“The teaching at uni is very good and after classes I always revise right away with Sophia. So I can take a bit of a break here."

Sei soddisfatta del supporto che ti stanno dando? Ho trovato sorprendente che tu abbia scelto questa scuola. Le loro lezioni sembrano un po' vecchio stile e manca di spazio. "

“Are you happy with the support you're getting? I found it surprising that you chose this school. Their lectures seem a bit old-fashioned and it lacks space.”

Raramente organizziamo gruppi di studio nel campus, ma non mi pento della mia decisione di studiare lì. Ho costruito molte nuove amicizie e la comunità studentesca è molto impegnata. Molti stranieri studiano lì grazie alle borse di studio dei loro governi e sono grata di essere in grado di saperne di più sulla loro vita.

“We hardly ever arrange meetings on campus, but I don't regret my decision to study there. I've built many new friendships and the student community is very engaged. Many foreigners are studying there on grants from their governments and I'm grateful to be able to learn more about their lives.

Questi ragazzi tengono molto alla politica e parlano degli scioperi che sembrano accadere costantemente nei loro paesi d'origine. Il campus è più modesto di altri, ma penso che l'ambiente dinamico compensi le dimensioni. Posso andare ovunque a piedi perché il campus è situato al centro. Non ho bisogno di un veicolo. 

"These guys are people who care a lot about politics and talk about the strikes that seem to be constantly happening in their home countries. The campus is more modest than others but I think the dynamic environment makes up for that. I can walk everywhere because the campus is situated in the centre. I don't need a vehicle.”

Ma devi ammettere che alcune parti del quartiere sono brutte. "

“But you have to admit that certain parts of the neighbourhood are ugly.”

All'epoca hai scelto la tua università per il suo grado o la sua posizione? Ho pensato alla tua, ma il principale svantaggio è il suo isolamento, non ci sono né bar né ristoranti.

“Did you choose your university for its rank or its setting back then? I thought about yours, but the main drawback was its isolation, there are no bars or restaurants at all.”

All'epoca non ero né socievole né affabile. Volevo diventare un avvocato e gli studenti maschi erano tutti molto competitivi. 

“I was neither sociable nor easygoing back then. I wanted to be a lawyer and the male students were all very competitive.”

“Anche molti dei miei amici studiano legge. I loro professori sono terribilmente severi. "

“Many of my friends are studying law too. Their professors are terribly strict.”

“Sì, anche i nostri istruttori ci seppellivano sotto un mucchio di lavoro. "

“Yes, our instructors buried us under a pile of work too.”

“Quando paragono l'economia con quello, è molto meno stressante. Quando presto attenzione in classe e rivedo un po' posso affrontare abbastanza bene gli esami. Alcuni argomenti sono essenziali, ma possiamo usare gli esami degli ex studenti e sono sempre adeguatamente preparata. "

“When I compare economics to that, it's much less stressful. When I pay attention in class and revise a bit I can deal with the exams pretty well. Some topics are essential, but we can use the exams of former students and I'm always adequately prepared.”

Sembra che ti piaccia davvero e che ti stia facendo molti amici lì. Ho anch'io vissuto molti momenti indimenticabili nella mia vita da studente, alcuni dei quali sono stati in realtà davvero imbarazzanti. Avevamo uno studente gay molto intelligente che aveva un segreto. Conosceva qualcuno della farmacia e riceveva da lui prescrizioni illegali. Quando ho scoperto che aveva fatto sesso con il farmacista, è stato uno shock per me. Ha avuto una discussione con il suo amante. Hanno iniziato a fare a botte e lo ha ucciso. Aveva bisogno di sbarazzarsi del corpo e mi ha chiesto di aiutarlo a nasconderlo. 

“It seems like you really enjoy it and that you're making many friends there. I also have many unforgettable moments from my student life, some of them actually quite embarrassing. We had a very intelligent gay student who had a secret. He knew somebody from the pharmacy and got illegal prescriptions from him. When I found out that he had sex with the pharmacist it was a shock for me. Then he had an argument with his lover. They started to fight and he murdered him. He needed to get rid of the body and asked me to help him hide it.”

Oh mio Dio! E tu cosa hai fatto?

“Oh my god! What did you do?”

Ho chiamato la polizia. Sono stata costretta a farlo.

“I called the police. I felt bound to do that.”
