C9 The theatre

安娜说服本和她一起去看歌剧。他这样做是为了取悦安娜。

Ānnà shuōfú Běn hé tā yìqǐ qù kàn gējù. Tā zhèyàng zuò shì wèile qǔyuè Ānnà.

Anna has persuaded Ben to go to the opera with her. He does it to please Anna.

“I haven't been to the ballet or theatre since secondary school, but I'll put up with this for you tonight.”

“I know you would rather do something else, but I'm sure this'll be worth it.”

“I find it stressful and often disappointing. Even if I like the performance, I'm overworked and incapable of being open-minded enough for this. After a long day, the music just makes me sleepy. We can go to a musical instead. That's less monotonous and the lyrics are understandable. We can also buy the albums and listen to music at home. Maybe the soundtrack of the new series you watch on channel three?”

“You sound like your little brother now. You're too old to lie on the sofa in a tracksuit and play your video games all day.”

“Ānnà, wǒ yǒu yígè jíhǎo de zhǔyì. Xià cì nǐ dài Kèlǐsī qù ba, yǔ cǐ tóngshí, wǒ kěyǐ bāng tā wán tā de diànzǐ yóuxì.”  

“Anna, I have an excellent idea. You take Chris instead of me next time, and in the meantime I could look after his video games.”

“等一下，我有一个更好的主意。“安娜用一个顽皮的语调说。  

“Děng yíxià, wǒ yǒu yígè gèng hǎo de zhǔyì.“Ānnà yòng yígè wánpí de yǔdiào shuō.  

“Wait a minute, I have an even better idea,” Anna says in a naughty tone.

“Wǒ yào ràng Láolā bǎ bàozhǐ de wénhuà bùfèn gěi nǐ lái xiě yígè yuè.”  

“I'll ask Laura to let you cover the cultural section for a month.”

“你敢！对我来说，那真的是一个惩罚。我是一个简单的家伙。我对这些事感到很不舒服。我可以每年一两次，穿西装打领带，为你做这种事。可是我不会每周都做的，好吗？”

“How dare you! That would be a real punishment for me. I'm a simple guy. I'm not comfortable at these events. Once or twice a year, I’ll dress in a suit and tie and do it for you. However, I'm not going to do that on a weekly basis, ok?”

“I won't make you do that. It's not good for our relationship either to impose this on you. I suggest you select an event you like and I'll get us tickets for it. “

“We could watch your favourite soap opera at home. Nobody would care about whether our haircut is unfashionable or not. We could just undress and lie on the sofa in our underwear.”

“Nǐ zài kāiwánxiào ba!” Bùyào zuò zhèyàng yígè bù kāihuà de báichī. Nǐ zhīdào wǒ duōme dì rè'ài qù xìyuàn, nǐ yì nián dāngzhōng gēn wǒ lái jǐ cì jiùxíngle “   

“You’re joking! Don’t be such a narrow-minded idiot. You know I'm very fond of going to the theatre and you could come with me a couple of times over the course of the year...”

“Without a doubt! To the best of my knowledge, there's always a break. If we're well-organised and get there early, we may get some free drinks from the barman. I know him well. As far as I'm concerned, that's the only perk tonight.”

Ben rises from his seat and descends the staircase quickly.

Anna speaks to some of the distinguished guests before joining Ben. In the salon drinks are served. He gives her a glass of wine.

“I prefer relaxation at home. I'm doing you this favour today, but whenever I'm in the mood to go out and enjoy the nightlife you'll join me as well.”

“是的，本，我会的。”

“Shì de, Běn, wǒ huì de.”

“Yes, Ben, I will do that.”
