C11 Qù Jiàotáng

C11 In Church

Dāngdì jiàotáng de mùshī jiēshòule zài mísa zhīhòu de cǎifǎng. Běn láidàole jiàotáng. Zhège lìshǐ yōujiǔ de jiàotáng nèibù hěn míngliàng, dàn yǒudiǎn lǎojiù érqiě yǒu hěnduō chéntǔ. Zhèlǐ de fēnwéi fēicháng ānníng.

The priest from the local church has agreed to an interview after mass. Ben arrives at the church. The interior of the historic church is light but also a bit old and dusty. The atmosphere is peaceful.

Ben sits in a pew and listens to the prayers. He lowers his head and suddenly he starts to shed some tears. He remembers his last visit to the church and how devastated he was about the death of his grandfather. When he has to sneeze, an old lady next to him shakes her head and mumbles something silently to herself.

huángù sìzhōu, xīnshǎng qǐ wéizhe tā de zhèxiē cǎisè diāokèpǐn hé shítou sùxiàng lái. Tā duì zhèxiē diāokè pǐn tèbié gǎn xìngqù. Zài jiàotáng zhòng kàndào rúcǐ fùyǒu xiǎngxiàng lì de wùpǐn jiǎnzhí yǒuxiē lìngrén kùnhuò.

He looks around and admires the colourful sculptures and stone statues that surround him. He is particularly interested in the sculptures. It is confusing to see so imaginative objects in church.

Yǒu yígè xiǎohào yuètuán zài biǎoyǎn, tā gēnzhe qǔdiào chuī qǐle kǒushào. Lǎo tàitài duì cǐ yě hěn bú zànchéng.

A trumpet orchestra is performing and he whistles the tune. The old lady disapproves of that too.

Bùjiǔ zhīhòu, zài mísā fúwù jiéshù hòu, mùshī xiàng tā zǒulái.

Shortly afterwards, the service finishes and the priest comes over to him.

“Nǐ hǎo, Dásītè xiānshēng!”

"Hello, Mr Dast!"

“Nǐ hǎo! Fēicháng gǎnxiè nín zhǔnxǔ wǒ jiù nín zhèngzài jīngyíng de míng wèi “chúnjié qiě yǒu bāngzhù” de císhàn qǐyè zuò zhè cì cǎifǎng.”

“ Hello! Many thanks for granting me this interview regarding the charity named ‘Pure and Helpful’  you're running.”

“Xièxiè nǐ, Dásītè xiānshēng, zài dédào duǎnzàn de tōngzhī hòu, zhème kuài jiù zhǎodào shíjiān lái jiàn wǒle.

“Thank you, Mister Dast, for finding time for me at such short notice.

Tōngcháng, wǒ huì gèng zǎo de gàozhī nǐ zhège juānkuǎn hūyù, dàn wǒ bùdébù gǎn shíjiān, yīnwèi wǒ xiǎng xiànzài jiù fàngchū míngquè de xìnhào. Dìzhèn de shòuhàizhě chéngshòule jùdà de tòngkǔ, wǒmen bìxū xiànzài ér bùshì zhīhòu cái zhīyuán tāmen.

Typically, I would notify you earlier of such aid appeals, but I had to rush because I wanted to put out a clear signal now. The victims of the earthquake have suffered greatly and we need to support them now rather than later.

Tāmen bùnéng yǒngyuǎn yìzhí děngzhe a. Zhè zhēn de hěn jǐnjí. Tāmen xiànzài yíqiè cóng líng kāishǐ. Zhǐshì xiū gè sǔnhuài de wūdǐng jiù xūyào huāfèi shù bǎi wàn. Wǒ qùle nàlǐ, wǒ jiǎnzhí bù gǎn xiāngxìn zìjǐ de yǎnjīng. Chéngshì lǐ de hǎojǐ gè  dōu zhěnggè xiāoshīle. Wǒ dāngshí duì zhèyàng de qíngkuàng wánquán méi yǒu zhǔnbèi.”

They cannot wait forever. This is really urgent. They start at zero again. It will cost millions just to repair the damage to the roofs of their houses. I've been there and I could not believe my eyes. Entire quarters of the city have just disappeared. I was not prepared for such an experience.”

“Wǒ dúdào dāngshí dàjiā dōu tīng bù dào jǐngbào, yīnwèi màikèfēng huò jǐngbào yīnliàng chūle wèntí, shì ma?” ”

“I read that the warning couldn't be heard because there was a problem with the microphones or with the volume of the warning?”

Shèbèi hěn zhèngcháng, dàn zài guòqù yǒu nàme duō de jiǎ jǐngbào, suǒyǐ jìnlái dāngdì de rénkǒu jīběn shàng dōu hūshì tā. Xǔduō xíngrén dōu jùjué tīngcóng zhǐshì, háishì liú zàile rénxíngdào shàng. "The equipment was fine, but in the past there have been so many false alarms that lately the population was simply ignoring them. Many pedestrians just refused to follow the directions given to them and stayed on the pavement. When houses which weren't constructed safely just crumbled down, they were killed. It's very messy there, the death toll is still rising further.

Gèng duō sǐzhě de shītǐ xiànzài zhèngzài cóng cánhái lǐ bèi qǔ chūlái. Xìngcúnzhě bìxū miàn duì bēitòng hé hūshì jǐngbào de nèijiù. Duì dìzhèn dàilái de sǔnshī jìnxíng de diàochá réngrán zài jìxù. Bodies are being extracted from the debris. Survivors are dealing with grief and the guilt of ignoring the alerts. The inquest into the damage is still ongoing. The completion of the assessment isn't expected before the end of the year. Some damage is invisible and requires a comprehensive analysis. The rescue is continuing. Teams which specialise in this are bringing in their tools and endeavouring to help the victims in their disastrous situation. There's still no running water and the scale of the reconstruction is unquestionably enormous.”

“Zhèngfǔ yuànyì zuò xiē shénme ma?”

“Is the government willing to do something?”

“Tāmen cānyùle sōusuǒ hé jiùyuán de gōngzuò, bìng nǔlì xiūfù gōnggòng jiāotōng.”

“They are involved in the search and rescue work and they're also trying to fix the public transport problems.”

“Wǒmen yǐhòu zěnme cáinéng fángzhǐ zhè zhǒng qíngkuàng zàicì fāshēng ne?” ”

“How can this be prevented in the future?”

“Qítā dìqū duì fēngxiǎn de guǎnlǐ hǎoduōle. Zhèlǐ de jīběn de ānquán guīdìng bìng méiyǒu dédào zūnshǒu. Tāmen běn yìnggāi duì yǒu gèng hǎo de liǎojiě. “Other regions are managing the risk better. Elementary safety rules were not followed. They should have known better. Stronger materials were developed long ago; if only they had been used to build the houses. It was also the fault of the unions and the government organisations.

Nàxiērén dōu hūshìle cáiliào de zhìliàng hé jiànzhùwù yīng yǒu de zuìdà gāodù. Duìyú fèixū zhōng fāxiàn de jiànzhú chǎnpǐn, jiāng huì yǒu gèng duō de yánjiū. Wǒmen hěn kuài jiù huì kàndào tā de zhōngqī bàogào. Rénmen yǐjīng kāishǐ qīnglǐchóngzào fángwūle, dàn zhè yīlài  gège guójì jīgòu lái zhīfù zhèxiē kāizhī.”

Those who neglected the quality of materials and the maximum height of the buildings. There will be more research on the products found in the ruins. We expect an intermediary report soon. People have started to tidy up and reconstruct their houses, but they're dependent upon the international institutions which cover the expenses.”
