D10 The exhibition

安娜和索菲亚在画廊里。安娜是会员，而且她可以带一位客人。她在入口处拿了一本供客人们用的小册子。

Ānnà hé Suǒfēiyà zài huàláng lǐ. Ānnà shì huìyuán, érqiě tā kěyǐ dài yí wèi kèrén. Tā zài rùkǒuchù nále yì běn gōng kèrénmen yòng de xiǎo cèzi.

Anna and Sophia are at the gallery. Anna has a membership and she can bring a guest. At the entrance, she takes a booklet that is at the disposal of the guests.

今天有一个现代艺术展览。这个展览是一位深受尊敬的艺术家的。来宾们正在排队观看。

Jīntiān yǒu yígè xiàndài yìshù zhǎnlǎn. Zhège zhǎnlǎn shì yí wèi shēn shòuzūnjìng de yìshùjiā de. Láibīnmen zhèngzài páiduì guānkàn.

Today there is a contemporary art exhibition by a highly respected artist. Guests are lining up to see it.

艺术专业人士们注意到，原件在从海外被粗心大意地运送来后，都没有得到过独立地验证。尽管这个展览被艺术经销商安排得有点可疑，还是吸引了安娜的注意。

Yìshù zhuānyè rénshì men zhùyì dào, yuánjiàn zài cóng hǎiwài bèi cūxīn dà yì de yùnsòng lái hòu, dōu méiyǒu dédàoguò dúlì de yànzhèng. Jǐnguǎn zhège zhǎnlǎn bèi yìshù jīngxiāo shāng ānpái de yǒudiǎn kěyí, háishì xīyǐnle Ānnà de zhùyì.

Art professionals have remarked that the originals have not been independently verified after having been carelessly transported from overseas. Despite the doubtful way in which it was set up by the art dealer, the exhibition attracted Anna’s attention.

Ānnà kànzhe tā de yāoqǐng xìn. Gāi jījīn huì zhǔnbèile kāimù yǎnjiǎng, suíshí jiù yào kāishǐle. Fángjiān lǐ tài jǐ le. Ānnà zhuā zhùle Suǒfēiyà de shǒu zhǒu, lǐngzhe tā líkāile rénshù yuè lái yuè duō de rén qún .

Anna looks at her invitation. The foundation has organised an opening speech that will start any minute now. The room is overcrowded. Anna takes Sophia by the elbow and leads her away from the growing crowd.

“咱们提前去看一看展会吧。那比待在这个混乱的大厅里愉快多了。”  

“Zánmen tíqián qù kàn yí kàn zhǎnhuì ba. Nà bǐ dāi zài zhège hùnluàn de dàtīng lǐ yúkuài duōle.”  

“Let’s have a look at the exhibition ahead of time. It would be more pleasurable than being in this chaotic hall here.”

当安娜带领索菲亚来到了放绘画的大厅时，她们正好听到了例行演讲后的掌声。

Dāng Ānnà dàilǐng Suǒfēiyà láidàole fàng huìhuà de dàtīng shí, tāmen zhènghǎo tīngdàole lì xíng yǎnjiǎng hòu de zhǎngshēng.

As Anna guides Sophia to a hall with illustrations, applause can be heard following the obligatory speeches.

“Look at how detailed and delicate these lines are. He really is a master of his craft and I have no doubt that these are the original paintings. What struck me when I first saw his work are these countless layers he uses to create depth. It's even more noticeable in daylight.”

“It’s a very special ability, look at it from this angle. It shows what's achievable with this lengthy and time-consuming process.”

Anna and Sophia enter an oval room and are speechless when they see the unconventional pieces of art there. From their perspective, they look like vertical columns. It is not until they step away that they see they are attached at the top and form a pyramid.

“你注意到这些肖像画里面的悲伤了吗？这画的颜色如此阴沉。这个艺术家的几个朋友最近失去了生命。他抓住了自己悲痛的感觉，并画在了画里。”  

“Nǐ zhùyìdào zhèxiē xiàoxiànghuà lǐmiàn de bēishāngle ma? Zhè huà de yánsè rúcǐ yīnchén. Zhège yìshùjiā de jǐ gè péngyǒu zuìjìn shīqùle shēngmìng. Tā zhuā zhùle zìjǐ bēishāng de gǎnjué, bìng huà zàile huà lǐ.”  

“Do you notice the sadness in these portraits? The colours are so sombre. Some of the artist's friends lost their lives recently. He captured his grief in his work.”

“The exhibition is incredibly well organised. I'd expected it to be more informal.”

“Wǒ yě juéde yìnxiàng shēnkè. Zhège yìshùjiā yǐjīng dédàole yìxiē yǒu yǐngxiǎng lì de tóuzī zhě de guānzhù, érqiě tāmen duì tā de juānzèng fēicháng kāngkǎi.”   

“I'm impressed too. The artist caught the attention of some influential investors and they've made some very generous donations.”

“我认为，画廊的经理现在要发表演讲了。很显然，这里的小报已经拥有了独家报道的权利。”  

“Wǒ rènwéi, huàláng de jīnglǐ xiànzài yào fābiǎo yǎnjiǎngle. Hěn xiǎnrán, zhèlǐ de xiǎobào yǐjīng yōngyǒu le dújiā bàodào de quánlì.”  

“I think the gallery director is going to give a speech now. Apparently the tabloid has the exclusive rights to it.”

“难怪本对今天来这里并不热心。这个来自小报的家伙经常喝醉，而且大多数时候简直没有能力去完成他的工作。”   

“Nánguài Běn duì jīntiān lái zhèlǐ bìng bú rèxīn. Zhège láizì xiǎobào de jiāhuo jīngcháng hē zuì, érqiě dàduōshù shíhòu jiǎnzhí méiyǒu nénglì qù wánchéng tā de gōngzuò.”   

“No wonder Ben wasn't eager to come today. That guy from the tabloid is constantly drunk, and he's barely capable of doing his job most of the time.”

“But evidently he's established a good cooperation with the gallery.”

“These things are unpredictable sometimes, but I understand Ben’s dissatisfaction and frustration. He's tried very hard to build a network here but it was all for nothing and the tabloid guy is taking his place.”

“Well, he has spent his lifetime in this town, but in the long run Ben’s approach will transform journalism here. As far as I know, there's an agreement now which would also allow City News to attend these events. Everybody seems to be in favour of it.”

“I only hope that you're right. Ben's been loyal to City News and he's put considerable effort into this, but I can see his enthusiasm disappearing. It's been revealed yet again today that there is a lot of dishonesty in the community here.

"Even though it was primarily Ben’s involvement in the project that helped them find the new investor, the tabloid has been given exclusive rights - it's a disgrace.”

“Shì de, zhè hěn búxìng. Zhèlǐ gāncuì méiyǒu yígè chéngshí de rén.”  

“Yes, it is very unfortunate. Honesty is altogether missing from this situation.”
