D12 The corporation

Laura e Ben estão investigando uma empresa que está planejando uma expansão em sua cidade. Eles viram o esboço de um plano ambicioso para uma nova fábrica de alumínio a ser construída em uma encruzilhada fora do centro da cidade. Os cidadãos gostariam, sem dúvida, de uma diminuição do nível de desemprego, mas os arredores estão em risco de contaminação.

Laura and Ben are investigating a corporation which is planning an expansion in their town. They have seen the draft of the ambitious plan for a new aluminium plant to be built at a crossroads outside the town centre. The citizens would undoubtedly like a decrease in the level of unemployment, but the surrounding areas are at risk of contamination.

A nova planta também pode poluir a margem do rio, embora a empresa afirme que o ácido tóxico usado na produção é inofensivo se novos dispositivos filtrarem o veneno. A construção da fábrica já está em andamento após um pedido de ambientalistas para impedi-la ter sido indeferido pelo município.

The new plant could also pollute the river bank, although the firm claims that the toxic acid used in the production is harmless if new devices filter out the poison. The construction of the plant is already in progress after a request by environmentalists to stop it was declined by the municipality.

Laura está furiosa:

Laura is furious:

“Eles estão construindo essas instalações e dando uma garantia de que as pessoas estarão seguras, mas todos percebem à primeira vista que isso é falso.”

“They're building these facilities and giving a guarantee that the people will be safe, but everybody sees at first glance that that's untrue.”

“E em vez de acabar com isso, o município apóia o projeto. Parece que eles sempre decidem a favor da empresa. Isso imediatamente me faz pensar em corrupção”.

“And instead of putting an end to it, the council supports the project. It would seem they always decide in favour of the enterprise. That instantly makes me think of corruption.”

“Bem, podemos fazer uso de nossos processos democráticos para parar essas coisas. Às vezes pode haver problemas, mas temos inspeções. A administração tem que avaliar e minimizar o impacto que isso pode ter politicamente, independentemente dos interesses corporativos.”

“Well, we can make use of our democratic processes to shut these things down. At times there might be problems, but we have inspections. The administration has to evaluate and minimise the impact this can have politically, regardless of corporate interests.”

“Muito justo, a este respeito temos sorte. Mas para o mundo em desenvolvimento, é mais difícil recusar. Os milhões de receita que isso traz para áreas pobres e densamente povoadas faz com que corram o risco, mesmo que bagunce seu ecossistema. Para eles, a criação de empregos é fundamental e, por isso, toleram essas táticas de negócios irresponsáveis. ”

“Fair enough, in this respect we're lucky. But for the developing world, it's harder to refuse. The millions of revenue this brings into poor and densely populated areas makes them take the risk even if it messes up their eco system. For them, the creation of jobs is crucial and so they tolerate these irresponsible business tactics.”

Laura acena com a cabeça e diz com entusiasmo:

“Vamos primeiro abordar nosso problema imediato aqui. Ouvi ontem que o nível de poluentes na água ainda é muito alto. Teoricamente, a modificação do sistema de filtro deveria ter levado a uma redução drástica, mas, estranhamente, foi mal sucedido.

“Let’s first address our immediate problem here. I heard yesterday that the level of contaminants in the water is still too high. In theory, the modification of the filter system should have led to a drastic decrease but, strangely, it was unsuccessful.

Está comprovado cientificamente que o filtro funciona. A amostra mais recente me preocupa porque revelou o fato de que, depois que o nível de poluentes diminuiu temporariamente, eles aumentaram substancialmente de novo. ”

It has been scientifically proven that the filter works. The most recent sample concerns me because it uncovered the fact that, after the level of contaminants decreased temporarily, they've now substantially increased again.”

“What's your source? Can we trust it?”

“We got the data with the aid of workers from the mine. They're not very educated, far from it, but exceptionally courageous. They've been exploited for years and now they're ready to expose the immoral behaviour of their superiors.”

“That might become controversial. They have a conflict of interest while they're still employed. It could also be seen as revenge after a disagreement with their company.”

“In my opinion, that makes their statement stronger - their conscience just doesn't allow them to ignore this anymore. The inspectors have been having similar concerns regarding another of their divisions after they found elevated levels of lead and they've been receiving complaints from people across the county.”

“The assistance given by the ambassador gave the project a boost, but there are rumours that he only submitted a vote in favour of it because he's greedy.”

“Yes, I've heard the same, there's a lot of gossip. In public he maintains the image of a caring diplomat, but he looks for profit whenever possible.”

“Yes! He has no honour. He's only motivated by money and by profitable deals. I found it suspicious that he expressed his support for the building permit.”

“He can be very persuasive. Every now and then when he decides to formally support a bid, he's always remarkably successful.”
