D12 The corporation

Laura und Ben ermitteln gegen eine Firma, die eine Expansion in ihrer Stadt plant. Sie haben den Entwurf des ehrgeizigen Plans für eine neue Aluminiumfabrik an einer Kreuzung außerhalb des Stadtzentrums gesehen. Den Bürgern würde der Rückgang der Arbeitslosigkeit zweifellos gefallen, aber die umliegenden Gebiete sind von Kontamination bedroht.

Laura and Ben are investigating a corporation which is planning an expansion in their town. They have seen the draft of the ambitious plan for a new aluminium plant to be built at a crossroads outside the town centre. The citizens would undoubtedly like a decrease in the level of unemployment, but the surrounding areas are at risk of contamination.

Die neue Anlage könnte auch das Flussufer kontaminieren, obwohl die Firma behauptet, dass die giftige Säure, die in der Produktion verwendet wird, harmlos ist wenn neue Geräte das Gift ausfiltern. Der Bau der Anlage ist bereits im Gange, nachdem ein Antrag von Umweltschützern ihn zu stoppen von der Gemeinde abgelehnt wurde.

The new plant could also pollute the river bank, although the firm claims that the toxic acid used in the production is harmless if new devices filter out the poison. The construction of the plant is already in progress after a request by environmentalists to stop it was declined by the municipality.

Laura ist wütend:

Laura is furious:

“Sie bauen diese Einrichtungen und geben die Garantie, dass die Menschen sicher sind, aber jeder sieht auf den ersten Blick, dass das nicht stimmt.

“They're building these facilities and giving a guarantee that the people will be safe, but everybody sees at first glance that that's untrue.”

Und anstatt dies zu beenden, unterstützt der Stadtrat das Projekt. Es scheint dass sie sich immer zugunsten der Unternehmen entscheiden. Das lässt mich umgehend an Korruption denken.”

“And instead of putting an end to it, the council supports the project. It would seem they always decide in favour of the enterprise. That instantly makes me think of corruption.”

“Nun, wir können wir unsere demokratischen Prozesse nutzen, um diese Dinge zu stoppen. Manchmal gibt es Probleme, aber wir haben Inspektionen. Die Verwaltung muss die politischen Auswirkungen unabhängig von den Unternehmensinteressen betrachten und minimieren.”

“Well, we can make use of our democratic processes to shut these things down. At times there might be problems, but we have inspections. The administration has to evaluate and minimise the impact this can have politically, regardless of corporate interests.”

“Na gut! In dieser Hinsicht haben wir Glück, denn für die Entwicklungsländer ist es schwieriger so etwas abzulehnen. Die Millionen an Einnahmen, die dies in arme und dicht bevölkerte Gebiete bringt, führen dazu, dass sie das Risiko eingehen, selbst wenn es ihr Ökosystem durcheinander bringt. Für sie ist die Schaffung von Arbeitsplätzen maßgeblich und deswegen tolerieren sie diese unverantwortlichen Geschäftstaktiken.”

“Fair enough, in this respect we're lucky. But for the developing world, it's harder to refuse. The millions of revenue this brings into poor and densely populated areas makes them take the risk even if it messes up their eco system. For them, the creation of jobs is crucial and so they tolerate these irresponsible business tactics.”

Laura nickt und sagt voller Eifer:

Laura nods and says with eagerness:

“Lass uns zuerst unser unmittelbares Problem hier lösen. Gestern habe ich gehört, dass der Gehalt an Schadstoffen im Wasser immer noch zu hoch ist. Theoretisch sollte die Modifikation des Filtersystems zu einem drastischen Rückgang geführt haben, aber seltsamerweise war es erfolglos.

“Let’s first address our immediate problem here. I heard yesterday that the level of contaminants in the water is still too high. In theory, the modification of the filter system should have led to a drastic decrease but, strangely, it was unsuccessful.

Es ist wissenschaftlich erwiesen, dass der Filter funktioniert. Die letzte Stichprobe beunruhigt mich, da festgestellt wurde, dass nach einer vorübergehenden Abnahme das Niveau der Schadstoffe jetzt wieder wesentlich gestiegen ist.”

It has been scientifically proven that the filter works. The most recent sample concerns me because it uncovered the fact that, after the level of contaminants decreased temporarily, they've now substantially increased again.”

“Was ist deine Quelle? Können wir ihr vertrauen?”

“What's your source? Can we trust it?”

“Wir haben die Daten mit Hilfe von Arbeitern aus der Mine bekommen. Sie sind nicht sehr gebildet, ganz im Gegenteil, aber außerordentlich mutig. Sie werden seit Jahren ausgebeutet und sind nun bereit, das unmoralische Verhalten ihrer Vorgesetzten aufzudecken.”

“We got the data with the aid of workers from the mine. They're not very educated, far from it, but exceptionally courageous. They've been exploited for years and now they're ready to expose the immoral behaviour of their superiors.”

“Das könnte kontrovers werden. Sie haben einen Interessen- konflikt, wenn sie noch dort beschäftigt sind. Es könnte auch als Rache nach einer Meinungs- verschiedenheit mit ihrer Firma gesehen werden.”

“That might become controversial. They have a conflict of interest while they're still employed. It could also be seen as revenge after a disagreement with their company.”

“Das macht ihre Aussage meiner Meinung nach sogar stärker, ihr Bewusstsein erlaubt es ihnen einfach nicht mehr, dies zu ignorieren. Die Kontrolleure haben ähnliche Bedenken bezüglich eines ihrer anderen Bereiche, nachdem sie dort erhöhte Bleiwerte gefunden haben und Beschwerden von Menschen aus dem gesamten Landkreis bekamen.”

“In my opinion, that makes their statement stronger - their conscience just doesn't allow them to ignore this anymore. The inspectors have been having similar concerns regarding another of their divisions after they found elevated levels of lead and they've been receiving complaints from people across the county.”

“Die Mitwirkung des Botschafters hat dem Projekt einen Schub gegeben, aber es gibt Gerüchte, dass er seine Stimme dafür nur abgegeben hat weil er gierig ist.”

“The assistance given by the ambassador gave the project a boost, but there are rumours that he only submitted a vote in favour of it because he's greedy.”

“Ja, ich habe das Gleiche gehört, es gibt viel Gerede. In der Öffentlichkeit pflegt er das Image eines mitfühlenden Diplomaten, versucht aber Profit zu machen wann immer er kann.”

“Yes, I've heard the same, there's a lot of gossip. In public he maintains the image of a caring diplomat, but he looks for profit whenever possible.”

“Ja! Er hat einfach keine Ehre. Er ist nur von Geld und von profitablen Geschäften motiviert. Ich fand es verdächtig, dass er seine Unterstützung für die Baugenehmigung aussprach.”

“Yes! He has no honour. He's only motivated by money and by profitable deals. I found it suspicious that he expressed his support for the building permit.”

“Er kann sehr überzeugend sein. Ab und zu, wenn er sich entschließt ein Angebot offiziell zu unterstützen ist er immer bemerkenswert erfolgreich.”

“He can be very persuasive. Every now and then when he decides to formally support a bid, he's always remarkably successful.”
