安娜坐在她的桌子前。她穿着一件开衫，因为天气有点凉。她吃了一块樱桃派并且在思考她学业的进展。在上一次小测中，她的分数是百分之八十。为此她做了非常密集的复习。

Ānnà zuò zài tā de zhuōzi qián. Tā chuānzhe yí jiàn kāishān, yīnwèi tiānqì yǒudiǎn liáng. Tā chīle yí kuài yīngtáo pài bìngqiě zài sīkǎo tā xuéyè de jìnzhǎn. Zài shàng yícì xiǎocè zhōng, tā de fēnshù shì bǎi fēn zhī bāshí. Wèi cǐ tā zuòle fēicháng mìjí de fùxí.

Anna is sitting at her desk and wearing a cardigan because it is a bit chilly. She is eating a piece of cherry pie and thinking about the progress of her studies. She obtained a score of 80 percent in the last quiz, for which she prepared intensively.

She has registered for the 'Different land, different culture' programme, which is run by her uni. This means she needs good grades in her language course because it is the examiner who will decide which students are eligible for a place on the programme.

She has many competitors who either speak the language fluently or are even bilingual, but she chose to enter into the competition regardless. She realises how selective it is and that success is unlikely but still hopes that she will be fortunate.

To select only the brightest students, entry onto the programme is difficult but the degree is worth it. It provides a complete refund of foreign university fees. The curriculum consists of all the necessary subjects for her degree.

She needs to improve her knowledge of grammar and her pronunciation. The teacher will also test pronouns and irregular verbs so she learns them by heart. She circles the correct responses in each category.

Sophia advised her to write everything down by hand. She had heard of this method which is supposed to accelerate the learning and hence is three times more effective than just reading.

Anna is hoping that with this new technique she will pass the exam reasonably well. She only narrowly passed the previous exam with the professor. She was unwell and still felt weak after an infection. She also did not have a download of some of the critical files from her student account and was not well-prepared.

She contacted the tutor, asked him kindly to extend the deadline and rearrange the exam, but he was very unfriendly. He thought she wanted to trick him and started to read out the guidance for exams to her over the phone.

He even suggested she should officially withdraw from the course because her performance was unsatisfactory. She remained calm and told him in a firm but icy tone that he was wrong.

When Ben comes home, she is just starting on the new chapter. He tells her about a case he has been working on.

“Over the last week, there've been many crimes which have presumably all been committed by the same group. After an attack on a truck driver, one thief got caught in a tunnel. Another criminal attacked a lady at a cashpoint outside a clinic.

In response to these incidents, the police is looking to put into practice some improved prevention measures without delay. I've just seen the up-to-date figure on criminal activity and it's risen extraordinarily yet again. It is really depressing."

“At least the police are starting to take action now; previously they did nothing. Everybody's mad about that.”

“Unless the city demonstrates urgently that they've addressed this, companies will suspend their investments here and many contracts will be lost. If the major doesn’t manage to reverse this trend at once, he risks being sacked.”
