D3 The Essay

Anna tem que escrever um ensaio para a universidade. Ela verifica o quadro de avisos no campus para obter uma visão geral dos temas restantes. A lista que está pendurada no quadro de avisos ainda contém alguns tópicos genuinamente interessantes.

Anna has to write an essay for university. She checks the noticeboard on campus to get an overview of the remaining themes. The list that hangs on the noticeboard still contains some genuinely interesting topics.

Ela envia uma mensagem de texto com a lista para Sophia. Em seguida, ela disca seu número de telefone para discutir sua colaboração.

She texts the list to Sophia. Then she dials her telephone number to discuss their collaboration.

“Sophia, outra pessoa já se inscreveu para o estudo do videoclipe.”

“Sophia, somebody else has already registered for the video clip study.”

Há um grito de decepção, mas Anna responde à Sophia em tom alegre:

There is a cry of disappointment but Anna replies to Sophia in a cheerful tone:

“Que pena, alguém chegou primeiro. Devíamos pegar algo mais convencional de qualquer maneira. Queremos ser economistas, afinal. Nosso professor tem preferência por tópicos analíticos e matemáticos e ele nos avaliará injustamente se fizermos algo tão pouco convencional.”

"Too bad, somebody else got there first. We should take something more conventional anyway. We want to be economists after all. Our professor has a preference for analytical and mathematical topics and he'll mark us unfairly if we do something so unconventional.

“Realisticamente, nossas melhores opções seriam tópicos econômicos, como taxas de câmbio, índice de inflação, crise financeira ou comércio internacional. Ele é muito conservador para qualquer outra coisa”.

"Realistically, our best options would be economic topics such as exchange rates, the inflation index, the financial crisis or international trade. He's too conservative for anything else.”

“Hmm, suas sugestões parecem aceitáveis, mas é provável que sejam muito difíceis. Temos menos de duas semanas. Acho que devemos escolher o desemprego feminino. Aliás, tenho uma cópia de uma tese escrita há alguns anos sobre esse assunto.

“Hmm, your suggestions sound acceptable but they're likely to be very difficult. We have less than two weeks. I think we should choose female unemployment. Incidentally, I have a copy of a thesis written a couple of years ago on that issue.

“A conclusão é muito boa. Teremos que atualizar alguns quadros e gráficos, mas podemos usar as mesmas fórmulas estatísticas e equações.”

"Its conclusion is very good. We'll have to update some charts and graphs but we can use the same statistical formulas and equations.”

“Perfeito, isso promete ter muito potencial, acho que o professor vai gostar também. Ele entende a importância da igualdade. Lembra-se de sua nora instruída que não se encaixava no estereótipo típico de mãe depois que adotou seus gêmeos?”

“Perfect, that promises to have a lot of potential, I think the professor will like it too. He understands the importance of equality. Remember his well-educated daughter-in-law who didn't fit the typical mother stereotype after she adopted her twins?"

“Ela tem sorte, tem a estabilidade de uma família com um marido trabalhador e uma renda separada da propriedade de sua empresa.”

“She's lucky, she has the stability of a family with a hard-working husband and a separate income from the ownership of her firm.”

“Outros não têm tanta sorte. A lei que foi imposta recentemente encurtou o período de proteção para as mães. A situação piorou e os critérios foram enrijecidos, o que significa que agora muitos não recebem mais do que o equivalente ao salário mínimo.

“Others aren't so lucky. The law that's recently been enforced has shortened the protection period for mothers. The situation has deteriorated and the criteria have been tightened which means that many aren't receiving more than the equivalent of the minimum wage now.

“Calcula-se que serão economizados cerca de dois bilhões de euros. Isso significa que as pessoas serão tributadas menos, mas ainda há muitas manifestações contra isso”.

"It's been calculated that an estimated two billion euros will be saved. This means people will be taxed less, but there are still a lot of demonstrations against it.”

“We can refer to the new law and summarise it.“

“Sim, é uma ótima ideia. Como regra geral, os pagamentos de licença parental serão cortados pela metade, especialmente para mulheres solteiras que recebiam uma porcentagem maior de sua renda antes, graças a esses pagamentos. ”

“Yes, that's a great idea. As a rule of thumb, parental leave payments will be cut in half, especially for unmarried women who were receiving a higher percentage of their income before thanks to those payments.”

“Como dividimos o trabalho? Devemos definir isso claramente agora, para não dobrar o trabalho. “

“How do we split the work? We should define that clearly now so that we don't double the work.“

“Deixe-me primeiro ler a antiga tese por completo para ver de quanto tempo precisaremos para reescrever. Nenhum dos exemplos, exceto talvez o terceiro, resume a situação atual corretamente devido à nova lei que foi aprovada. Temos que ter isso em mente e ter certeza de não negligenciar nenhuma outra mudança legal. ”

“Let me first read over the old thesis in full to see how much time we'll need to rewrite it. None of the examples, apart from maybe the third one, outline today's situation correctly because of the new law that's been passed. We have to keep that in mind and make sure we don't overlook any other legal changes.”

“Farei as correções finais de nosso trabalho como um todo se você me enviar seus anexos. Eu sou melhor em colocar minuciosamente cada ponto e vírgula onde eles pertencem, como você sabe. ”

“I’ll do the final corrections of our work as a whole if you send me your attachments. I'm better at accurately putting every dot and comma where it belongs, as you know.”

“Bem que eu gostaria, mas estou tendo problemas com minha conexão de banda larga. Posso enviá-los a você por fax ou entregá-los no campus. ”

“I'd like to but I'm having problems with my broadband connection. I can fax them to you or give them to you on campus.”

“Você pode me enviar um email de seu smartphone com os documentos anexados?”

"Can you email me from your smartphone with the documents attached?”

“Não consigo acessar o banco de dados virtual, nem do meu smartphone nem do meu laptop. O cursor está visível, mas o clique do touchpad não funciona. ”

“I can't access the virtual database, either from my smartphone or my laptop. The cursor's visible but the click from the touchpad doesn't work.”

“Esse disco rígido não é acessível gratuitamente. Você só pode exportar arquivos do disco quando estiver na universidade. Tive o mesmo problema quando quis exportar uma de minhas planilhas do Excel. ”

“That hard drive isn't freely accessible. You can only export files from the disk when you're at uni. I had the same problem when I wanted to export one of my excel spreadsheets.”

“Como posso subornar você para fazer isso?" Sophia implora a ela.

“How can I bribe you to do this?” Sophia begs her.

“Sua preguiça é espantosa! Você sabia que precisávamos começar com isso hoje, e você deveria ter feito isso antes! ”.

“Your laziness is quite astonishing! You knew that we needed to begin with this today, and you should have done this before!.”

“Está um pouco frenético aqui. Só poderei chegar à universidade na segunda-feira, enquanto você está trabalhando nisso agora. Nem é preciso dizer que farei algo por você em troca.”

“It’s a bit hectic here. I'll only be able to get to uni on Monday whereas you're there working on it now. It goes without saying that I'll do something for you in return.

“De forma alguma quero que haja controvérsia entre nós por causa desta tarefa. Posso fazer a apresentação e também ajudá-la na negociação da bolsa de estudos na próxima semana.”

"By no means do I want there to be controversy between us over this assignment. I can do the presentation and also help you with your negotiation for the scholarship next week.”

“Isso seria ótimo! Quero poder realizar meu sonho e para isso preciso muito dessa bolsa. “

“That would be great! I want to be able to realise my dream and for that I really need this scholarship. “
