Laura está relatando o julgamento contra o prefeito e está muito entusiasmada. Justiça e equidade sempre foram importantes para ela e ela é fascinada por julgamentos.

Laura is reporting on the trial against the mayor and is very enthusiastic. Justice and fairness have always been important to her and she is fascinated by trials.

Ocasionalmente, ela até participa de julgamentos civis quando está de folga. Ela gosta de ouvir os investigadores que descrevem cada caso individual e chegam aos poucos ao motivo do crime.

Occasionally, she even attends civil trials when she is off duty. She likes to listen to the investigators who describe each individual case and arrive at a motive for the crime little by little.

Na semana passada, um comerciante contou uma história assustadora. Um tiroteio aconteceu bem do lado de fora de sua loja e um de seus conhecidos ficou gravemente ferido.

Last week, a shopkeeper told a terrifying tale. A shooting happened right outside his shop and one of his acquaintances was severely injured.

O atirador e seu companheiro foram presos uma semana depois, mas, naturalmente, isso causou transtornos e muitos de seus clientes começaram a fazer compras em outro lugar.

The shooter and his companion were arrested a week later but, naturally, it caused disruption and many of his clients have started to shop elsewhere.

O comerciante tem agora uma fechadura melhor na porta e, nesse meio tempo, também instalou um novo monitor de segurança. Ele entrou em muitos detalhes durante o julgamento e sua história dominou os pensamentos de Laura ao longo da semana seguinte.

The shopkeeper now has a better lock on his door and, in the meantime, has also installed a new security monitor. He went into a lot of detail during the trial and his story dominated Laura’s thoughts throughout the next week.

Laura will have to follow today’s case from start to finish since she is reporting on it exclusively. The readers' interest in it is well above average and she notes down her observations in her neat handwriting.

O prefeito é acusado de assassinar cruelmente o amante secreto de sua esposa, mas afirma ser inocente.

The mayor is accused of cruelly murdering his wife's secret lover, but he claims that he is innocent.

A mídia espera uma confissão dele e está frustrada com seu advogado, que insistiu em excluí-la do julgamento.

The media is hoping for a confession from him and they are frustrated with his solicitor, who insisted on excluding them from the trial.

Os preparativos estão encerrados e o júri ocupa seu lugar, mas o advogado de defesa continua ausente.

The preparations are finished and the jury members are taking their seats, but the defence attorney is still absent.

“Sentem-se, por favor, o julgamento está começando.”

“Please be seated, the trial is beginning.” 

O juiz está irritado porque o advogado se atrasou e o deixou esperando.

The judge is irritated because the attorney was late and kept him waiting.

“No mínimo você poderia cumprir nosso cronograma. Espero que você faça isso daqui para frente. ”

“At the very least you could comply with our timetable. I expect you to do so going forward.”

O advogado parece angustiado. Um dos clientes ricos que ele representa está se divorciando e ele teve que vê-lo pessoalmente.

The attorney looks distressed. One of the affluent clients he represents is getting divorced and he had to see him in person.

“Fiz todo o possível para chegar na hora, mas havia engarrafamentos.”

“I did my utmost to be on time but there were traffic jams.”

A viúva está sentada na primeira fila. Cheia de desespero, ela encara o suspeito e murmura: “Espero que eles prendam você por muito tempo”.

The widow sits in the first row. Full of despair, she stares at the suspect and mutters: “I hope they lock you away for a long time.”

Uma testemunha confirma que a vítima teve um caso com a esposa do prefeito.

A witness confirms that the victim had an affair with the mayor's wife.

“Isso é ultrajante! Ela é uma mulher respeitável. Ela nunca me enganaria e teria uma relação sexual com outro homem ”, diz o prefeito agressivamente.

“This is outrageous! She's a respectable woman. She would never deceive me and have a sexual relationship with another man,” the mayor says aggressively.

Laura fica surpresa por ele negar o caso com tanta firmeza. Não permaneceu um segredo na cidade e todo mundo começou a fofocar sobre isso há muito tempo.

Laura is surprised that he denies the affair so firmly. It did not remain a secret in the town and everybody started gossiping about it long ago.

A testemunha evita olhar para o prefeito e continua fornecendo informações sobre a noite em questão.

The witness avoids looking at the mayor and continues to supply information about the night in question.

“No início, ela o beijava com paixão, mas depois eles tiveram uma discussão. Ela resistiu-lhe e ele perdeu a cabeça. Ele a atacou, deu um tapa nela e ameaçou machucá-la.” 

“Initially, she was kissing him with passion, but then they had a quarrel. She resisted him and he lost his temper. He attacked her, slapped her and threatened to harm her.”

“Então foi estupro”, interrompe o prefeito. Ele está visivelmente pálido.

“Then it was rape,” the mayor interrupts. He is noticeably pale.

“Não chegaremos a lugar nenhum dessa forma.” O juiz está bravo.

“We won't get anywhere like this.” The judge is angry.

O jornalista que se senta ao lado de Laura começa a falar: “Você acha que eles vão condená-lo?”

The journalist who sits next to Laura starts talking: “Do you think they'll sentence him?”

“Isso vai depender muito do testemunho da esposa dele. Se ela soluçar e ficar histérica, isso enfraqueceria as chances dele. A sua libertação, no entanto, deve-se ao fato de não terem provas concretas contra ele ”, responde Laura.

“That'll largely depend upon his wife’s testimony. If she sobs and becomes hysterical it would weaken his chances. His release, however, is likely because they have no concrete evidence against him,” replies Laura.

“Ele não está cooperando, mas não é estúpido. Pelo contrário, se ele infringiu a lei e é o assassino aqui, duvido que ele seria tão agressivo agora. “

“He's not cooperating, but he's not dumb. On the contrary, if he broke the law and is the killer here, I doubt that he'd be so aggressive right now. “

“Eu discordo de você. Ele é amplamente conhecido por ser brutal, por se superestimar e por reagir como um louco. Seu comportamento ofensivo não me surpreende. ”

“I disagree with you. He's widely known to be brutal, to overestimate himself and to react like crazy. His offensive behaviour doesn't surprise me.”
