E12 The Museum

Бен едет со своим братом Крисом в музей высоких технологий, в котором есть много гаджетов и инноваций. Входной билет для подростков недорогой. Бену приходится платить по более высокой ставке, но он считает это оправданным и с удовольствием платит, потому что музей выставляет очень инновационные механизмы, а также различные приборы. Изюминкой нынешней выставки является настоящая ракета.

Ben is going with his brother Chris to a high-tech museum in which there are a lot of gadgets and innovations. The admission for teenagers is cheap. Ben has to pay a higher rate but he thinks it is justified and happily pays it because the museum is exhibiting very innovative machinery as well as different appliances. The highlight of the current exhibition is an actual rocket.

«Какое топливо нужно для этого двигателя? Они используют керосин для этого типа?»

“What kind of fuel does this motor need? Do they use kerosine for this type?”

«Я думаю, что тогда они использовали ядерную энергию, но сейчас они отказались от этого. Сегодня было бы немыслимо всё ещё использовать ядерную энергию как источник энергии для этого. Начало освоения космоса было небезопасным, потому что они столкнулись со множеством непредвиденных проблем. Последующие модификации шаттла были немного более стабильными».

“I think they used nuclear power back then, but they've abandoned that now. Today it would be unthinkable to still be using nuclear as a source of power for this. The beginning of space exploration was unsafe because they encountered a lot of unforeseen problems. The subsequent versions of the shuttle were slightly more stable.”

«Как ты думаешь, сколько времени потребовалось, чтобы построить ракету?»

“How long do you think it took to construct the rocket?”

«Я думаю, что им пришлось долго экспериментировать, прежде чем они получили первый прототип, но я могу только предположить. Давай возьмем брошюру, я уверен, что они перечислили эти факты в ней. Технология была очень неэффективной. Тогда наша нация добилась большого прогресса в этой области; Папа до сих пор с гордостью говорит об этом».

“I think they had to experiment a long time before they got the first prototype, but I can only estimate it. Let's get a brochure, I'm sure they'd list these facts on it. The technology was very inefficient. Our nation made a lot of advances in the area back then; Dad still talks proudly about it.”

“So boring!”

Бена забавляет резкий комментарий Криса и его нетерпеливое желание уйти, но он уже привык к характеру подростков и тому, как быстро они теряют интерес к вещам.

Ben is amused by Chris’ sharp comment and his hurry to leave, but he is already used to the temper of teenagers and how quickly they lose interest in things.

Затем он замечает что-то липкое на земле и понимает, что Крис хочет выбраться оттуда, прежде чем охранник заметит его жвачку на полу.

Then, he notices something sticky on the ground and understands that Chris wants to get out before the guard notices his chewing gum on the floor.

На этот раз Бен решает не упоминать об этом, но внимательно следить за тем, что Крис будет делать дальше. 

Ben decides not to mention it this time but to keep a closer eye on Chris going forward.

Он позволяет затащить себя в следующую комнату, где находится гигантский телескоп. Сложная диаграмма показывает соотношение между размером Земли и звёзд, а вывеска рядом с ней кратко объясняет, как работают механизмы внутри телескопа.

He lets himself be dragged to the next room which contains a giant telescope. A complex diagram shows the ratio between the size of the earth and the stars, and a sign beside it briefly explains how the instruments inside the telescope work.

They stroll into the next room where the evolution of electrical power is put into context by expert commentary.

Бен указывает на портативную швейную машинку.

Ben points to a portable sewing machine.

«Посмотри на это, сегодня лазеры используются даже в швейных машинках. Движение этого лазера происходит от механизма здесь. Спусковой механизм передаёт импульс, который улавливает его аналог на второй стороне, и иглы начинают двигаться. Меня впечатлило то, насколько сложна электроника в этих машинах сегодня».

“Look at this, lasers are even being used in sewing machines today. The movement of this laser derives from the mechanism here. The trigger transmits an impulse which is detected by its counterpart on the secondary side and the needles start moving. I'm impressed by how complex the electronics in these machines are today.”

Бен смотрит в сторону Криса и видит, что он с любопытством читает всю техническую информацию.

Ben looks in Chris’ direction and sees that he is curiously reading over all the technical information.

“Today, finance plays an important role in science faculties. Inventors are obliged to show the suitability of their ideas for the market.

"It's a question of finding the right niche. I think reducing the carbon footprint and renewable energies are spheres in which they'll recruit a lot.

"Smog is also a problem in big cities and emission targets are being reconsidered. Historically, there was a general refusal to regulate the industry, but after the climate summit sponsorship initiatives have restarted.”

“Dad says that it's all a rip-off and that they have no right to restrict the usage of fuel.”

«Он не должен быть для тебя примером. Его большой дизельный автомобиль - всего лишь символ статуса, и политики справедливо пытаются устранить их и заменить электромобилями».

“He shouldn't be a role model for you. His big diesel car is just a status symbol and politicians are rightly trying to eliminate them and substitute them with electric vehicles.”
