E2 The promotion

本已经在城市新闻工作一段时间了。而且已经准备面对下一个挑战了。他一直在寻找与他的技能相对应的工作机会。不时，会有他感兴趣的工作出现但他常常不完全有相关的资格。曾经有一个恐怖主义专家的职位但要想有资格，他得需要是一个母语人士。 

Běn yǐjīng zài chéngshì xīnwén gōngzuò yíduàn shíjiānle. Érqiě yǐjīng zhǔnbèi miànduì xià yígè tiǎozhànle. Tā yìzhí zài xúnzhǎo yǔ tā de jìnéng xiāng duìyìng de gōngzuò jīhuì. Bùshí, huì yǒu tā gǎn xìngqù de gōngzuò chūxiàn dàn tā chángcháng bù wánquán yǒu xiāngguān de zīgé. Ben has been working at City News for some time now. He is ready for the next challenge. He has been looking at job opportunities that correspond to his skills. Once in a while, there are jobs that interest him, but often he does not exactly have the right qualification. There was a position as a terrorism expert, but to qualify for it he would have needed to speak the native language of the country the job is based in.

Terrorists plant bombs everywhere. Local people don't trust the foreign press. Only a native speaker of the language can disguise themselves as a local and find the right leads therefore Ben’s application was rejected. He is now looking to renew his current contract.

他希望最好是能留在《城市新闻,因为他从老板那里得到了非常好的评价，甚至有几期还获得了优。可是，他现有的工作已经不像以前那么要求高了。

Tā xīwàng zuì hǎo shì néng liú zài “chéngshì xīnwén”, yīnwèi tā cóng lǎobǎn nàlǐ dédàole fēicháng hǎo de píngjià, shènzhì yǒu jǐ qī hái huòdéle yōu. Kěshì, tā xiànyǒu de gōngzuò yǐjīng bú xiàng yǐqián nàme yāoqiú gāole.

Preferably, he would like to stay with City News, since he has received very positive feedback from his boss and has even gotten distinctions for some editions he worked on. However, his current job is not demanding enough anymore.

Tā xiànzài zuò de hěn qīngsōng érqiě hěn yǒuxiào dàn tā biàn de rìyì wúliáo qǐlái. Tā xiàng lǎobǎn yāoqiúle shēngzhí. Tā de jìngzhēng duìshǒu méiyǒu tā nàme hégé, érqiě Běn duì zìjǐ huì bèi xuǎnzhòng hěn lèguān.

He does it efficiently and with ease but he is becoming increasingly bored. He asks for a promotion. His competitor is less qualified and therefore Ben is optimistic he will be chosen.

Whilst speaking with the publisher about his promotion, he brings up a major article he recently wrote for the latest issue.

“Mr Dast, I understand that you'd like to take charge of the team, but let me raise a question first: have you ever supervised others before? I don't want to sound rude, but I think you're not yet ready to take control.

As the head of the team, you would report directly to the management committee, and you'd be involved in commercial decisions. That's an awful lot of responsibility for somebody who has only been around for two years.”

“Why is that the conclusion you're drawing? I've not had supervisory responsibility yet, that is true, but I have very successfully established relations with everybody. I'm no stranger to the team and I collaborate very well.

I am decisive in crisis situations, like the explosion in the plant or when I dared to enquire about the bribes. I also have a very good sense for working calmly until we hit a breakthrough.

I even got an award for investigating the chemical plant. The one at which the authorities cut the poisonous carbon dioxide output. That eventually resulted in a ban on steel production close to residential areas!”

“Regarding the report on the chemical plant, it was with astonishment that I noted how you managed to put the people in charge behind bars. I have looked at all the aspects of your work. While you are very productive and skilled, I'm still unsure about whether this is the right step for you right now.

I don't doubt your abilities or your intelligence, but there are certain elements that are a bit tricky. One objection from our headquarters will be your age: You're more junior than the average. Last but not least, they will also look at the pay. You're already well-paid for your age group. It will be difficult to give you a salary increase.”

“所以，我已经满足了你的要求。而且这个升职取决于总部是否指任我，是吗？”  

“Suǒyǐ, wǒ yǐjīng mǎnzúle nǐ de yāoqiú. Érqiě zhège shēngzhí qǔjué yú zǒngbù shìfǒu zhǐ rèn wǒ, shì ma?”  

“So I satisfy your requirements. And the promotion depends on whether the head office appoints me?”

“是的，董事会成员们会制定内部和外部的候选人名单，然后为继任者投票。”   

“Shì de, dǒngshìhuì chéngyuánmen huì zhìdìng nèibù hé wàibù de hòuxuǎnrén míngdān, ránhòu wèi jìrèn zhě tóupiào.”   

“Yes, the board members will compile a list of internal and external candidates and then vote for the successor.”
