E2 The promotion

Ben trabalha no Notícias da cidade há algum tempo e está pronto para o próximo desafio. Ele tem procurado oportunidades de trabalho que correspondam às suas habilidades. De vez em quando, há empregos que o interessam, mas muitas vezes ele não tem exatamente a qualificação certa. Havia um cargo de especialista em terrorismo, mas para se qualificar, ele precisaria falar a língua nativa do país em que o trabalho está baseado.

Ben has been working at City News for some time now and is ready for the next challenge. He has been looking at job opportunities that correspond with his skills. Once in a while, there are jobs that interest him, but often he does not exactly have the right qualification. There was a position as a terrorism expert, but to qualify for it he would have needed to speak the native language of the country the job is based in.

Terrorists plant bombs everywhere and local people don't trust the foreign press. Only a native speaker of the language can disguise themselves as a local and find the right leads. Ben’s application was therefore rejected, and he is now looking to renew his current contract.

Preferably, he would like to stay with City News, since he has received very positive feedback from his boss and has even gotten distinctions for some editions he worked on. However, his current job is not demanding enough anymore.

He does it efficiently and with ease but he is becoming increasingly bored, so he asks for a promotion. His competitor is less qualified and Ben is optimistic he will be chosen.

Whilst speaking with the publisher about his promotion, he brings up a major article he recently wrote for the latest issue.

“Why is that the conclusion you're drawing? It is true that I've not had supervisory responsibility yet, but I have very successfully established relationships with everybody. I'm no stranger to the team and I collaborate very well.

I am decisive in crisis situations, like the explosion in the plant or when I dared to enquire about the bribes. And I also have a very good sense for working calmly until we hit a breakthrough.
