E4 Shǒushù

E4 The Surgery

劳拉的养父在医院。他患有骨癌，而且刚刚被他的医生送回了医院。

Láolā de yǎngfù zài yīyuàn. Tā huàn yǒu gǔ ái, érqiě gānggāng bèi tā de yīshēng sòng huíle yīyuàn.

Laura’s stepfather is in hospital. He is suffering from bone cancer and has just been sent back to the hospital by his doctor.

他的病已经彻底地打乱了他的生活，并且他正在试着适应这个新的现实。他的疾病强迫他要冷静下来，而且把生活的步伐放慢。

Tā de bìng yǐjīng chèdǐ de dǎ luànle tā de shēnghuó, bìngqiě tā zhèngzài shìzhe shìyìng zhège xīn de xiànshí. Tā de jíbìng qiǎngpò tā yào lěngjìng xiàlái, érqiě bǎ shēnghuó de bùfá fàng màn.

His illness has deeply disrupted his life and he is trying to adapt to his new reality. His sickness has forced him to calm down and live at a slower pace.

他希望会有能使得他全愈的，有关这个病症的新发现。但是他知道，就现在而言，相关研究人员都对此比较悲观。然而，他试图像一个乐观主义者那样思考，而且期望会有一个奇迹。

Tā xīwàng huì yǒu néng shǐdé tā quán yù de, yǒuguān zhège bìngzhèng de xīn fāxiàn. Dànshì tā zhīdào, jiù xiànzài ér yán, xiāngguān yánjiū rényuán dōu duì cǐ bǐjiào bēiguān. Rán'ér, tā shìtú xiàng yígè lèguān zhǔyì zhě nàyàng sīkǎo, érqiě qīwàng huì yǒu yígè qíjī.

He hopes that there will be new discoveries about the disease which could lead to his cure. But he knows that, for the moment, researchers are rather pessimistic. Nevertheless he tries to think like an optimist and hopes for a miracle.

他握着杯子的把手，用茶勺搅了搅茶水。他注视着窗外，想到他当年多么愚蠢地推迟了体检。现在他害怕这一切都已经太晚了。

Tā wòzhe bēizi de bǎshǒu, yòng chásháo jiǎole jiǎo cháshuǐ. Tā zhùshìzhe chuāng wài, xiǎngdào tā dāngnián duōme yúchǔn de tuīchíle tǐjiǎn. Xiànzài tā hàipà zhè yìqiè dōu yǐjīng tài wǎnle.

He grips the handle of his cup and stirs his tea with a teaspoon. He gazes out of his window and thinks about how he foolishly delayed his medical examination. Now he fears that it is too late.

他看了看时钟，意识到他的手术会在明天这个时间完成，那时他就会安心了。

Tā kànle kàn shízhōng, yìshí dào tā de shǒushù huì zài míngtiān zhège shíjiān wánchéng, nà shí tā jiù huì ānxīnle.

He looks at the clock and realises that his operation will be over by this time tomorrow and that he will be relieved.

他更新了遗嘱，并且会给和劳拉母亲一起领养的儿子留很大一份财产。劳拉当然也有权接受她的那份遗产。

Tā gēngxīnle yízhǔ, bìngqiě huì gěi hé Láolā mǔqīn yìqǐ lǐngyǎng de érzi liú hěn dà yí fèn cáichǎn. Láolā dāngrán yě yǒuquán jiēshòu tā dì nà fèn yíchǎn.

He has updated his will and will be leaving a large portion of his possessions to the son he adopted with Laura’s mother. Laura is of course also entitled to receive her part of the heritage.

他还对他的遗体，坟墓和陵园作了具体的指示。他需要非常坚强的神经来组织他的葬礼但鉴于他的情况，他必须面对现实。

Tā hái duì tā de yítǐ, fénmù hé língyuán zuòle jùtǐ de zhǐshì. Tā xūyào fēicháng jiānqiáng de shénjīng lái zǔzhī tā de zànglǐ dàn jiànyú tā de qíngkuàng, tā bìxū miàn duì xiànshí.

He has also given specific instructions regarding his remains, his grave and the cemetery he wants to be buried in. He needed very strong nerves to plan his own funeral but, in view of his condition, he had to face reality.

Tā tīngjiàn zǒuláng li yǒu jiǎobù shēng. Bùjiǔ zhīhòu, yǒurén pāi mén, ránhòu Láolā jìnláile. Tā zhènzuò qǐlái, ránhòu zuò zhíle.

He hears footsteps in the corridor. Shortly afterwards, somebody taps at the door and Laura enters. He pulls himself up and sits up straight.

“爸爸，你好！你好吗？我正在写的一个故事，是关于城里一个新的餐饮公司的。所以顺路来拜访一下你。“   

“Bàba, nǐ hǎo! Nǐ hǎo ma? Wǒ zhèngzài xiě de yígè gùshì, shì guānyú chéng lǐ yígè xīn de cānyǐn gōngsī de. Suǒyǐ shùnlù lái bàifǎng yíxià nǐ.“   

“Hi Dad! How are you? I'm working on a story about a new catering company here in town. So I decided to drop by.”

“感谢你能来，我知道你一直很忙。治疗很艰难，而且我总是睡着。我刚才又打了个盹。”  

“Gǎnxiè nǐ néng lái! Wǒ zhīdào nǐ yìzhí hěn máng. Zhìliáo hěn jiānnán, érqiě wǒ zǒng shì shuìzháo. Wǒ gāngcái yòu dǎle gè dǔn.”  

“Thanks for coming to see me! I know how busy you always are. The treatment is tough and I fall asleep all the time. I just had another nap.”

“好吧，现在你醒了，而且看起来不错。”你也会赢得这场战斗的。 我对此很有信心，”  

“Hǎo ba, xiànzài nǐ xǐngle, érqiě kànqǐlái búcuò.” Nǐ yě huì yíngdé zhè chǎng zhàndòu de.  Wǒ duì cǐ hěn yǒu xìnxīn,”  

“Well, right now you're awake and you look good. You'll win this battle too, I have faith in that .”

“总是会有特殊情况。”他低声说。医生来跟他聊过了复发的情况，而且机率对他来说不是很有利。  

“Zǒngshì huì yǒu tèshū qíngkuàng." Tā dī shēng shuō. Yīshēng lái gēn tā liáoguòle fùfā de qíngkuàng, érqiě jīlǜ duì tā láishuō bú shì hěn yǒulì.  

“There are always exceptions," he says quietly. The doctor has just told him about a setback and that the odds are not in his favour.

“当年我做出不要适当的治疗这个荒唐决定时，我基本上，就是给自己挖了个坟墓。”   

“Dāngnián wǒ zuò chū bú yào shìdàng de zhìliáo zhège huāngtáng juédìng shí, wǒ jīběn shàng, jiùshì jǐ zìjǐ wāle gè fénmù.”   

“When I made the absurd decision to not get the appropriate treatment, I was basically digging my own grave.”

“Jìdé nǐ zǒng shì gàosù wǒ bàn bēi shuǐ shì bàn mǎn de ér búshì bànkōng de ma? Wǒ zhīdào nǐ xiànzài gǎndào hěn wúlì, zhè duì nǐ láishuō hěn nán dàn zhège zhěnsuǒ tígōng zuì xiānjìn de zhìliáo. Tāmen yǒu qìjīn wéizhǐ zuìhǎo de zhuānjiā, bìngqiě huì tígōng zuì jiānduān dì zhìliáo fāngfǎ.”  

“Remember how you always told me the glass is always half full? I know it's hard on you to feel so powerless, but this clinic provides state-of-the-art therapies. They have by far the best specialists and they provide the most sophisticated treatments.”

“我真的很烦生病这件事。我很厌恶医院。不论他们对我多么好，我对自己必须待在这里心里充满了怒气。我感觉自己就像个囚犯。”  

“Wǒ zhēn de hěn fán shēngbìng zhè jiàn shì. Wǒ hěn yànwù yīyuàn. Búlùn tāmen duì wǒ duōme hǎo, wǒ duì zìjǐ bìxū dāi zài zhèlǐ xīn lǐ chōngmǎnle nùqì. Wǒ gǎnjué zìjǐ jiù xiàng gè qiúfàn.”  

“I'm just so sick of this sickness. I have such a dislike for hospitals. No matter how nicely they treat me, it fills me with rage that I have to be here. I feel like a prisoner.”

“我知道你讨厌当病人，但不能不讲道理啊。你必须有一个开放的心态。现在人们已经获得了巨大的技术进步。与10年前对比，现在的进步十分迅速。非常有效的疗法已经被开发出来了。”   

“Wǒ zhīdào nǐ tǎoyàn dāng bìngrén, dàn bùnéng bù jiǎng dàolǐ a. Nǐ bìxū yǒu yígè kāifàng de xīntài. Xiànzài rénmen yǐjīng huòdé le jùdà de jìshù jìnbù. Yǔ 10 nián qián duìbǐ, xiànzài de jìnbù shífēn xùnsù. Fēicháng yǒuxiào de liáofǎ yǐjīng bèi kāifā chūláile.”   

“I know you hate to be a patient, but don't be unreasonable. You have to keep an open mind. There has been tremendous technological progress in recent years. A comparison to the situation 10 years ago shows the rapid progress that has been made. Some very effective therapies have been developed.”

“Thank you for stopping by and for always keeping me company.”

“ 当然，爸爸！”  

“Dāngrán, bàba!”  

“Of course, Dad”
