E7 The celebration

A cunhada de Sophia convidou Sophia e Marc para comemorarem o nascimento de sua filha bebê. Sua família inteira, bem como alguns amigos das aldeias vizinhas, estão lá.

Sophia’s sister-in-law has invited Sophia and Marc to celebrate the birth of their baby daughter. Her entire family as well as some friends from the neighbouring villages are there.

“Como você está? Você parece ótima”.

“How are you? You look great.”

“Oh Sophia, isso é gentil da sua parte! Estou totalmente exausta, já tive tantas noites insones! Nós nos revezamos para cuidar da bebê. Eu me canso facilmente desde o nascimento e é ótimo ter alguém para me apoiar. ”

“Oh Sophia, that's nice of you to say! I'm totally exhausted, I've had so many sleepless nights! We take turns looking after the baby. I grow tired so easily since the birth and it's great to have somebody to back me up.”

“Não hesite em nos ligar se precisar de ajuda ou apoio moral. Você sempre pode contar comigo! ”

“Don't hesitate to call us if you need help or moral support. You can always rely on me!”

“Obrigada. Normalmente sou muito orgulhosa para fazer isso, mas neste caso as coisas às vezes ficam fora de controle. No momento, estamos brigando muito e confesso que isso acontece porque estou muito tensa. Eu costumava sempre ter orgulho da minha aparência, mas agora estou lutando para recuperar minha forma e fortalecer meus músculos.

“Thank you. I'm usually too proud to do that but in this case things sometimes get out of control. We're currently quarrelling a lot and I confess that it happens because of how tense I am. I used to always take pride in my looks but now I'm struggling to regain my figure and build up my muscles.

Meu estilo de vida mudou e perdi a independência. Nunca tenho tempo para respirar fundo, praticamente pulo o almoço. Eu mais ou menos consigo cuidar da casa e tudo mais, mas nunca tenho tempo para fazer algo relaxante. ”

"My lifestyle has changed and I've lost my independence. I never have time to take a deep breath, I virtually always skip lunch. I more or less manage to look after the household and all that, but I never have time to do something relaxing.”

“Isso deve ser muito cansativo, principalmente se o bebê for cheio de vida quanto o seu. Sua casa não está realmente desarrumada. Na semana passada, estive na casa de uma amiga cujo bebê nasceu no verão passado e sua casa estava uma bagunça absoluta. Ela tinha pasta de dente na blusa e não lavava o cabelo há semanas. ”

“That must be very tiring, especially if the baby is as lively as yours. Your house is really not untidy. Last week I was at a friend’s whose baby was born last summer and her house was an absolute mess. She had toothpaste on her top and hadn't washed her hair for weeks.”

“Bem, convenientemente, minha sogra mora a não mais que 10 minutos daqui e ela realmente faz jus à sua reputação de supermãe. Tive uma gripe na semana passada e ela veio imediatamente.

“Well, conveniently, my mother-in-law lives no more than 10 minutes from here and she really lives up to her reputation as a super-mum. I had the flu last week and she came over immediately.

Ela desempacotou suas coisas e assumiu todo o controle para mim. Ela não tem nenhum problema com a bebê, ela tem uma influência muito calmante sobre a pequena - é como se ela, automaticamente, se comportasse bem no momento em que a vê. "She unpacked her things and took over everything from me. She has no trouble with the baby at all, she has a very calming influence on the little one - it's as if she automatically behaves the moment she spots her. I wish she would be here around the clock. I'm lost without her.”

“É ótimo que ela faça isso, eu acho que por enquanto você deveria pedir a ajuda dela quando você estiver sobrecarregada. Você tem sorte que ela é uma aposentada e tem uma grande paixão por crianças. ”

“It's great that she does that, I think for the time being you should ask her to help when things are overwhelming you. You're lucky that she's a pensioner and has such a passion for children.”

“Sim, sou muito grata por isso. Sempre que ela está aqui, finalmente tenho tempo para fazer todo o trabalho doméstico tedioso e inevitável. Mas, diga-me, como você está, Sophia? Ouvi dizer que houve demissões em sua empresa? ”

“Yes, I am very thankful for that. Whenever she's here I finally have time to do all the tedious and unavoidable housework. But, tell me, how you are doing, Sophia? I heard there were redundancies in your company?”

“Sim, mas não afetou a nós, os estagiários. Os executivos tomaram algumas decisões estratégicas para fechar alguns departamentos que não eram mais sustentáveis. ”

“Yeah, but it didn't affect us trainees. The executives made some strategic decisions to close some departments that weren't sustainable anymore.”

“Did they consult with the employees? Or did they dare implement this without asking the delegates that the workers elected? They really stop at nothing to please the stock market.”

“They offered voluntary redundancy payments but a lot of the employees were reluctant to accept them. They could also have negotiated a settlement. There's an immense solidarity among the employees. They have nominated a spokesman to represent them. They also have collected signatures and drafted a memo about their demands”

“It's shameful that the management can just kick out personnel like that.”

“Bem, esses departamentos foram improdutivos por um longo tempo e dissolvê-los era inevitável. Hoje, é normal que os funcionários sejam deslocados, tomem a iniciativa e se motivem para aprender coisas novas”.

“Well, those departments had been unproductive for a long time and dissolving them was inevitable. Today, it's normal for employees to relocate, take the initiative and motivate themselves to learn new things.”

“Você está certa. O mercado de trabalho está indo bem no geral. As estatísticas mostram que, apesar da globalização, ainda há vagas para muitos empregos da classe trabalhadora, e até tem havido muito recrutamento na indústria de carvão. Entretanto, a rotatividade lá é especialmente alta porque o trabalho é muito sujo e repetitivo ”.

“You're right. The labour market is doing well overall. Statistics show that, despite globalisation, there are still vacancies for many working class jobs, and there's even been a lot of recruitment in the coal industry. The turnover there is notably high though, because the work is so filthy and repetitive.”

“But globalisation discriminates against those who can't relocate so quickly. If your children are in daycare here, the move to another area is hard.”
